We Are Failing Our Teens
The bullying. The pressure. The substance abuse. The violence. The murder .The inordinate and real fear. It’s not okay!
We are failing our teens and they are crying out to be noticed and taken seriously. They are asking for active support, supervision, and help.
It’s a tricky time and it’s gotten trickier in our immediate world: 2018, the year not only of the Parkland, Marjory Stoneman Douglas High-School shooting, but also of the Thousand Oaks shooting at the Borderline Bar and Grill where many young people loved to hang out, and… how about the November Woolsey Fire? Then, in addition to these “sensational” horrors, there are the everyday hurdles such as feeling around for one's personal identity, friends, homework, divorce, birth, pregnancy, sexuality, family illness and/or loss, and the list does go on.
The evidence is that teens thrive in their peer groups. They take seriously what their friends and acquaintances have to say. I have been conducting group therapy for more than thirty years, and have also taught professionals entering the field. If you notice that your teenage child is struggling and you are concerned that it is more than just the normal “slings and arrows” of growing up, please do not hesitate to reach out. In weekly sessions, we will gather, in groups of no more than 8 teens at a time, in my pillowy kick-back room and check-in. We will discuss and explore whatever is on their minds without censorship, but with care. The kids will lead the direction of each group, and I am there to help, interpret, make links and connections, and guide. The groups take the form that your children ask for and need. We will discuss issues head-on and sideways.
If you are curious don’t hesitate to call, (310) 863-4800. I am available to come and speak at schools, community centers, events, anywhere I can be helpful.
